Seine Sampling

Seining involves the use of a net to capture small fish.  We generally perform seine surveys during the summer, after bass and most other fish have spawned.  Although the technique isn’t used to evaluate mature fish populations directly, it can provide a fairly accurate idea of the pond’s balance.  We take several seine samples in shallow areas and then use a simple flow chart to provide you with management options.  This survey can be used in water bodies without a suitable place to launch an electrofishing boat, or can be a cost-effective sampling alternative for budget-minded pond owners.
